Solar Thermal System Pressure : r/Plumbing

Pressure is tied to multiple factors such as height difference between pump and panels, plus the solar system operating temperature (higher pressure means higher boiling point temperature).

FAQs 6

How does a solar circulator work?

When the pressure gauge on the solar loop shows a normal operational pressure (e.g., 25 psi) the system is charged and the fill valve is closed and the charge pump is shut off. During this step, the bypass valve must be opened and the solar circulator must be put into normal operation so the collectors can be cooled by normal fluid flow.

How does a solar loop work?

This pushes liquid from the bucket into the expansion tank. When the pressure gauge on the solar loop shows a normal operational pressure (e.g., 25 psi) the system is charged and the fill valve is closed and the charge pump is shut off.

Do closed systems need to be pressurized?

Closed systems must be pressurized to satisfy three requirements: 1. The pressure at the fill point must be high enough to push the fluid to the top of the system. This is normally only a concern when the fill point is in the basement, but you can understand why there would be problems if there were literally no fluid in the top part of the system.

How does a closed-loop solar heating system work?

In the case of the closed-loop solar heating system, the HTF is typically a mixture of water and propylene glycol. The process of filling the plumbing system with this antifreeze while purging all the air out must be done systematically and in the right order. This is known as “charging” the system.

Do solar thermal pump stations have hose threads?

Bosch and Buderus solar thermal pump stations have BSP hose threads, which are slightly different from US NPT hose threads. US hoses do connect but require 3 or more fl at gaskets to make a water tight fi t. Hoses must be glycol, pressure (100 psi) and temperature (200°F / 95°C) proof.

How does a solar purge valve work?

Make sure the fill valve feeds the bottom of the solar collectors so that liquid entering the fill valve will push any air in the system up to the top of the solar plumbing loop. The purge valve provides a path for fluid to return from the top of the solar collectors back to the mechanical room.
